Storage Area Networks
What is SAN? A SAN is a high speed network whose purpose is to connect multiple heterogeneous servers to a shared storage system-generally through either a fibre channel or ethernet switch.
What issues does a SAN address?
What is SAN? A SAN addresses many problems associated with the traditional server attached storage model. In the traditional model each server requires its own dedicated storage resulting in poor storage utilzation. Back-up and recovery is diffucult. Users are "locked in" to a particular storage architecture. Administration of many different "islands of storage" requires more and more stuff.
The implementation of SAN will enable the following:
A large pool of storage can be shared among many servers improving storage utilization.
Recovery from data hazards can be accomplished in minutes through an intuitive wizard based interface.
Different technologies can be "mixed and matched" like FC and ISCSI server connectivity and FC and SATA disk drives.
Administration is streamlined by utilizing a single integrated management interface.
Booting the operating system from the SAN allows for a new, efficient, server acquisition strategy called acquiring diskless servers.
